network loading error

getting an error message of "error while loading protocol number 1 :error 59

i have reinstalled my nic (3com 3c905-tx) 3 times. also removed all registry entries dealing with the network. i have ran win98se setup no help. updated the nic drivers today. also after i hit the ok button i login as normal and the network runs fine including accessing the internet using a router no problem. I just don't know the meaning of the message.

any help would be appricated.

I do vaguely remember running into this problem before... I believe 3COM installs some other king of monitoring adapter (in the networking protocols). If it's there.. remove it... that should fix the problem. You don't need it anyway. Also run MSCONFIG and see if anything with 3COM loads at startup... remove it also. That's all I can remember... I wish I took notes.

Well is assigned a static ip and subnet mask to the nic. (subnet=255.255.255.0)
error has now gone away, but now i cannot connect to the internet.

my router is a nx-ishare from nelux

It is set to not assign a ip and to use PPPoe as the network protocol but, i cannot find the adaptor in the network settings any more?

also should i assign the nic to a gateway of the router? would this help??

Well, protocol 1 is ICMP. I don't know what this error 59 is, but apparently, there is something wrong with a setting somewhere above your computer. It's not your computer because the error still occurs after you reinstall. I would guess either the router or your ISP's DHCP server.

Fix it back the way you had it, when all components were working except for this message. Since you didn't get the message when you assigned your IP address manually, I'm almost certain ICMP is being filtered at the ISP. If that's the case, you may want to check with to find out what registry setting you need to change to match theirs. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Nope... in this case protocol 'n' means the number of the network protocol in the windows registry... so don't think of ICMP... just what DON found out seems to be right

i have fixed the problem. the router was giveing bad ip addresses to the client pc's which was causeing the error. i fixed it by turning off distribute ip addresses on the router.

Sorry it's me agin. same problem. when I did a fresh install of nic adaptors and PPoE adaptor with the ip's software it loaded fine. Then i installed the nexlux router and software and set it up not to distrubute ip's to client's and put in the PPoe id and password. I then proceeded to logon and it was fine. then I rebooted the pc and no problem and it logged on fine to the internet and no errors. I there was no problems the rest of the day. so i figured no problem. then i shut down and when i turned it back on it came back. protocol 1 loading error on loading error 59. i can still access the internet and all clients on network. It just keeps giving me that error message.
