    Red face Errors on Gigabit Links (Flow Control?)

    I'm running two NT Servers (with Netgear GA620T cards) into a HP2524 Switch on gigabit copper links.

    Flow Control is Enabled on the Switch, and Tx and Rx Flow Control is enabled on the cards in the server.

    But when I look at the Switch settings and port counters on the switch, billions (literally) of Rx Errors?

    Could some please help me, or explain what the whole Flow Control thing is about!

    Enable flow control on the switch, disable it on the servers. i haven't fooled with flow control in god knows how long. I never use it, and I don't really think you need it at all nowadays. Someone else here may know for sure, but in the meantime, I would say disable it entirely and see what happens.

    Copper is not a good medium for running GigE-links... so I would thing there's a fault on the cable...

    As you have only RX faults on the one side... try changing the direction of the cable and you should see RX faults on the other side (or just get another cable with high specs)

    I'm appear to be receiving the errors on both links (as there are two servers), and they are both getting exessive errors.

    Unfortunatly the HP Switch from what I can see, only shows RX Flow Control Errors. That maybe a switch limitation, or i'm just not looking properly. The cable are v. expensive moulded ones, kept as short as possible!

    Any other ideas?

    i would try different cables i mean this is only a 100 base network or if you are going through a patch check the patchbay you should find the problem there

    IS the network Cat5, Cat 5e, or Cat 6? Gigabit should work on cat 5e no problem. I would enable flow control on the server, and disable on the Switch. Similar setup with a customer. Works just fine like this. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

    The servers are actually connected directly to the switch, I wanted to keep the data run as short as possible, with as few connections. So its just 2 meter Cat5e patch cables in use.

    The confusing thing is that the Rx Errors, are IDENTICAL for each of the gigabit ports??? - Coincidence??
