http://www.zonelabs.com/ It's free for personal use and does a pretty decent job as far as software based firewalls. If you are going to pay, I agree with Checkpoint, I use it as our corporate firewall.

blackice and norton personal firewall are very good, now if this is not for personal forget this. If for somehting else than personal you need a good proxy, if in windows then microsoft proxy.

Do you leak any fluids, do you have any bumps on your rear, do you have any unpleasant odors?
If you answered yes to any of these then you are not qualified to own a new AMD ATHLON XP.
If someone ask you if you are running the all-new fastest AMD ATHLON XP, just turn around and reply "WHY YES, AND ITS CERTIFIED"

Read about the antics at www.grc.com before you consider going with BlackICE Defender--it is a FAILURE. ZoneAlarm ( www.zonelabs.com) is the only truly good firewall I have ever seen, and it suffers from its latest version being very buggy. If you can locate an older version of it I would consider using it over the latest version.

Do NOT use BlackIce Defender. It is a failure and on their own website they state in small print that it is NOT a firewall, merely an "intrusion detection system".

Additionally, I read an article in Maximum PC where they subjected six different firewalls to various tests including port scans, installation of Back Orifice, and DDOS attacks. BlackICE did actually pass all of these tests--so did ZoneAlarm. Norton Personal Firewall failed.

Black Ice Defender isn't a firewall, the company that produced it has finally come clean and have annoucned its a Intrusion Detection program. For one thing the dumb thing tells the prober that the ports blocked.

ZoneAlarm or a good NAT is the way to go, as it will stealth the ports as well as block them. Most others don't stealth.
