losing network connection
We have 130 users on our LAN. One of them has been having problems recently.
His computer is running Win2k. He tells me that whenever he closes Internet Explorer, or his screensaver (password enabled) pops up, he loses his connection to the LAN and has to relog on to get his mappings back and use his network based application.
I tried switching his Network card from an Intel to a 3com, but it is no different. He is running at 100mbps/Full Duplex.
I just switched his port connection in the switch, and am waiting to hear feedback from him.
What else could I try? I can't find any settings that would help, though I am not an expert on Win2k. We only have a few computers running Win2k, but this is the only one giving us trouble.
Thanks
Rafi

right click my network places go to properties...right click the nic card and go to properties...click on configure then click on power management...check the box "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"...not sure if it'll fix the problem but its something else to try

Well, it seems that was the problem. Since I switched the ports in the switch, he tells me he has not experienced the problem again.
Thanks

Rafi Shalom,
Actually you've disabled a feature...
Windows 2000 "Disconnects" network drives (but when he click on it - it comes back) in order to reduce network traffic.
When a drive is mapped in Previous OS - there is an open Session between the computer and that Share - which cause network to Slug.
But if the work requires it - you did fine

theres a command line to fix it from disconnecting all the time.
The fix, only for when you get the red X
goto start -> run -> regedit (not regedit32)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\lanmanserver\parameters
now under autodisconnects
right click it and goto modify.
now make sure its on decimal and type in 4294967295
to check if its right the Hexdecimal should be ffffffff

Do you leak any fluids, do you have any bumps on your rear, do you have any unpleasant odors?
If you answered yes to any of these then you are not qualified to own a new AMD ATHLON XP.
If someone ask you if you are running the all-new fastest AMD ATHLON XP, just turn around and reply "WHY YES, AND ITS CERTIFIED"

Thanks, buddy. The problem wasn't the red x. He would try to get into the mapped drive and he would get a message that it is unavailable. He would try to use his network-based app and he would get an error. Switching ports solved it. I wish I knew how to configure the switch. I know some basic things, but I couldn't figure this one out.
Oh well, works fine now.

Thanks, but the red x doesn't really bother me. Should it? Is there a problem created by the auto-disconnect? That wasn't my problem, see above..

Well, some programs that are ran from the network or depends on running through a mapped drive will have problems with the red X's. Since windows disconnects them when on idle then reconnects when you try to conenct again. But most programs will have trouble connecting. I have 2 programs here at work that have this problem.
