    Angry Router Ping Lag

Alright, I'm getting annoyed with routers at this point...I tried 2 Addtron routers (lame) and a Netgear and have had the same problem: After about 10-15 minutes my ping starts going thru the roof...I can ping Geocities for example and get a reply of like 30ms but after a few minutes it starts going up and stays up until I reboot the router...my ping to the router never changes so it's only between the router and the outside that has a problem but I've checked all my numbers (IP, DNS, etc.) and they all seem fine...it's just a simple @home internet sharing situation and I'm running win2K...any ideas? This is driving me nuts...I want to get back to my CounterStrike!!!
If it ain't broke, it probably will be soon...

NWCS what is your set-up? Addtron sounds like a real router, not like I am trying to do, software based. I have not been able to get it up, yet. I think I am getting close.
If someone who has done it succesfully, I maean @ home type set up, and share with us I sure would appreciate.

Check out this site first and if you have any more questions let me know. I have a 3 computer home network set up with @Home service. Two have Win2K, and 1 has Win98. I have no routers, no hubs. It's all software configuration, and everything works great. The only catch is I can only play online games on the main, non-NATed computer because the slight lag that NAT imposes causes performance loss in games on the other computers.

The problem is that I don't have an option to rely on any one computer to be on all the time for any sort of ICS...I basically am stuck with a router...

We actually have a Linux server running NAT that has performed GREAT. We have 6 computers on the same external IP, and I haven't experienced much lag. It's only like a 133MHz box that runs as a dedicated firewall/NAT server. Look on the net for Linux NAT configuration, and you should find a guide.

On another note, can you post the configuration of the router here? Do a dump of the config to a file or summat? Make sure NAT is enabled... check the IP's internal and external, that stuff. You might try doing static IP's instead of the DHCP server. It could (for whatever reason) cause those problems...

Yes, the config would help. Sounds like it might be timeouts for blackhole router detection....or timeouts for something else related.. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
