Best bet is to go to www.acronymfinder.com - great for all those industry abbreviations for which don't have the faintest clue as to what they stand for.

In networking terminology MDF stand for Main Distrubition Facility and IDF stands of Intermediat Distrubution Facility.

Internet access comes in to the building at the POP (Point of Presences) the POP feeds into the MDF (Think of the MDF has the main wire closet for the building). The MDF feeds the IDF's(Closet for each area/floor). The IDF then feeds the workstations/servers

In MS SQL Server, MDF is a database file. LDF is a transaction log file. If you saw ldf, lowercase, in written notes only, not spoken, maybe it was actually LDF?

    [quote] IDF

Intermediate distribution facility. Secondary communications room for a building using a star networking topology. The IDF is dependent on the MDF. See also MDF
