    Post Win98/2k Hybrid Network Probelm

I've just changed the NIC in a 98 workstation and come accross the following problem:

The new 98 machine can't see any other system on the network. The other systems can see each other but not the new 98 machine. I've checked the cables & hubs - no problem.
I also checked the TCP/IP, IPX & Netbeui settings (each one on the system for testing purposes) and the File & print sharing settings.

The 98 machine in question can ping itself, and gets a standard win98 IP address (it should have an address assigned by the DHCP server, i.e. 192.168.0.x) but it doesn't. When I put the system into a different workgroup to the others, the other systems on the network can see the workgroup, but not the system itself...

I suspect its a dicky NIC, but have you any suggestions, as it seems pretty zany that a workgroup gets created but no machine.

    Let me know

    Cad

I've had the same problem on my network...usually i reboot 2 or 3 times and release/renew the ip address...sometimes it works other times i have to move the nic to a different pci slot. For me, its not a nic problem because it happens with 3 different cards.

The thing is, this machine was on the network previously, but it had to have 98 re-installed because of an HDD failure. The system did have a PCI NIC in it then, and was fine on the network, but the NIC fried itself (the motherboard was okay tho), so I had to replace it with an ISA NIC. Unfortunately, the machine has only 1 ISA slot, which is a bit of a bummer as far as slot changing is concerned

    Yeah, thought youd say that

In truth, I can, but ISA at the time spelt:

Desperate for a solution and this is the only thing I've got hell it might work....

    Oh well.

The only decent DSATISOTIGHIMW device that i have ever had work properly was a modem anyway... It was too much to hope for.

    Cheers anyhows

Do you have a domain server or just a peer-peer network?

Machine account for 98 workstation if it's a domain ?
Unlikely but possible: Check settings for NIC to make sure the speed is correct with half duplex.
Try another port on the hub / switch.

Share a folder on the win98 system.
    Um. Driver?

do you have ethernet internet access? Does it work on that machine?

Can you ping that IP address from another machine? Can you ping the other machines from that one?

Sounds like a bad NIC, bad driver or both. I LOVE ISA nic's.
