Post 2 win2k machines unable to see each other

i have 2 win2k machines, both exactly the same except for 1 minor detail, the computer name is different.
both have administrator logged in with the same password.
both are connected to the same hub and then to a cable modem. now here's the kicker. neither comp can ping the other, find the other on net neighborhood, or any other way i can think of. yet both have internet access through the hub, can play diablo2 with each other via tcp/ip .
    anyone have any ideas?

file and print sharing is on, accounts are set up, both computers logged in as administrator.
both puters dual boot win98/2k in win98 mode they can ping each other and share files no problem but in win2k mode they can't even ping each other.

i can't find the one computer from the other, no ping, no search, no net neighborhood will pull the other puter up. both still acces the internet via the network hub and cable modem but are completely oblivious to each other except in win98 mode.
