Re-Networking
I have an HP Pavilion 8160 and I had to reformat the HD recently. System was up on our MS PTP LAN successfuly for several weeks, then I decided to add a new 20GB HD...now it won't get back up on the network. Everything seems to work during startup and login, but I can only see my HP in Network Neighborhood. When I check Entire Network I see the right Workgroup, but in the WG is only the HP. I also lost my sound when I reformatted the HD previously, and I'm trying to get that back too, but even when I take the sound card out of the config I still can't get to the net. Any thoughts?

Are you sure you have the right configuration? IP address, Mask?
I guess if you see yourself in the workgroup, your nic is working right, but with the wrong IP address...
Are you able to see the computer from others?

I haven't checked after every reboot, but I have been able to see my system from a couple of the other systems in the net...just can't get to it from them. Does that suggest anything you can think of that might be the cause?
Thanks

A few things:
the help files provided with Win9x have a basic network troubleshooter:
these are some of the questions it asked:
- Are you in the correct workgroup?
- Have you installed the necessary network components?
- Is the cable securely connected to your network adapter?
- Are the appropriate network client and protocols installed?
I've checked the protocols (NetBEUI, TCP/IP installed)
I've tried other CAT-5 cable (makeshift connection to hub)
The IP addressing is dynamic because we use a proxy server, but I've also tried a static IP with proper subnet mask
The TX/RC light stays on quite a bit which seems somewhat unusual...
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Can you ping the other machines?
If you use the UNC can you attach to them? (start>>run: \\[machine name]\[share name]) if you can then the problem is with browsing - make sure that you have NetBIOS set to enable (in TCP/IP setup)-

Tiger I would double check your nic drivers
I have had this happen before on win98 machines, what os are you using ?
If you are using win98 usually a reinstall will fix it, if you are using winnt you might have go into the registry and manually remove the network components

These are the facts and they are undisputed
