    Question Wierd Network Problem

I recently got suckered into one of those things where a friend of a friend needed help with a home network problem and I reluctantly agreed to look at it.
Two machines running Windows 2000. A Dell PIII and an old IBM PII. Each is running TCP/IP with DHCP enabled. They are hooked into a LinkSys Befsr41 router. Both machines can access the internet. Both machines can ping the router with successfull replys. However, they can't access each other on the network. When I ping the IBM from the Dell, I get replys. When I ping the Dell from the IBM the requests timeout. They are both part of the same workgroup. I checked and replaced the cabling just in case. I exchanged the crappy Linksys network cards for 3Com 905B's. I disabled the Zonealarm running on the Dell. The only things I can still think of are either the Zonealarm program, which I have no experience with, somehow blocks connections even though it's turned off or perhaps a bad router? But, if that were the case, why can I ping the Ibm from the Dell. Any thoughts, suggestions, or help would be apprecaited

Just to maybe get the wheels turning, what do you get after running ipconfig /all at the command prompt of each computer?

I had a similiar problem with my home network, 2 computers, 4 port LinkSys router, and I got the advice to add the Netbeui protocol so I could access the other computer. Once added, everything has been running smoothly. Also, make sure you run the networking wizard on each machine to get everything up and running. Hope this helps.

Just thought I'd let you guys know...Zone Alarm Pro was the problem. It installs two things into the services that don't shut down when you shut the program down. It sets up some sort of IP filtering that was blocking the connection.

You can in zone alarm tell it to allow communications from the specific Ip address of the other computer.
