Post CD ROM on Dell Optiplex GM 5100?

My friend has a Dell Optiplex GM 5100 (old computer) and I tried to get the CDROM to work, but when the PC boots it can't find any drivers or something like that and in the BIOS it is detected as a "Something Packet device" or something like that...

Why doesn't a CDROM on this PC work? I'm about to get a new motherboard for him on ebay to fix and upgrade it at the same time.

    Thanks

If you use a bootable disk with CD-ROM support, is it working under DOS-prompt?

<a href="http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/dta/stingm/00000037.htm" target="_blank">Here is the bios setup for the GM </a> You can access the other documentation from there too.

If you could be more specific about the error messages, we can help further.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
