Red face Limited broadband ....

Hi Guys!

BROADBAND LIMITED TO 5Gb/month!!!

Here in Canada broadband ISP's are planning to cap bandwith to 5Gb / month .That means residential users can upload/ download only 5Gb a month and if U cross that limit U will be charged extra $$ for each additional Gb.According to my sources only a limited # of people know about this but we are all shocked by hearing and seeing all this happening.

I want to see the opinions of US broadband customers and whether they have such a cap in effect at this moment or not.I think it is absolutely unacceptable to limit the amount of data that broadband users can download each month but it looks like we won't have much choice up hear in Toronto!Well what is you opinion?

Australian broadband has been limited since day dot.

Most accounts have 3 gig limits, are hugely overpriced, and the service utterly sucks.

People need to realise that bandwidth isnt free, and if you want a service at all, you will need to shell out for it.

Given another 2 years, we will probably see fast, uncapped broadband everywhere, but until that time, like it or lump it.

but then ,considering what you said of no other broadband choices, then it's still better than dialup!

$110 AU for 3 months dial up access, no setup fee, no new gear needed, no download limits, 10 meg webspace, and 5 email accounts.

Now, for a decent broadband service, I would be paying $110AU a month, $500 setup fee (includes ethernet modem), get one email account, 20 meg of webspace, and be limited to 10 gig per month, *but* that 10 gig is assigned in on, and off peak times, which make it sorta pointless to have.

I would never pay for a capped data transfer. Speed cap is bad enough, but data cap? NO WAY!

If you're in Toronto and you don't like Sympatico, try www.istop.com - they offer service for $30 a month not including modem rental (so you have the option of buying your DSL modem), a 20 gig combined up/down cap, and static IP for only $4 more a month. I'm seriously considering switching.

Also lots more discussion on the topic here:

Over here people are always talking about how good your broadband is.

Thanks for your replies !At least it is good to know we are not alone in this bandwith cap thing!

Some of U said that bandwith is expensive to companies which I truly believe but what I do not understand is the way ISP's raise the price of their service .We have been enjoying unlimited cable/dsl service for a few years now with no limit of how much we can download and upload for around $40-50 a month however the speed was capped at certain level especially for dsl users but hey I was still satisfied with the service ...
Now they will turn everithing around and I could end up paying $500 maybe even $1000 each month if I want to continue doing my downloads and websurfing. This is like a kick in the face !

I'll see how the cap affects me, if it's bad, I'll switch. only $2 more than what i'm paying now, and i'll get a built in router, static ip and more u/d... And they support my favorite PPPOE protocol.. Raspppoe (BTW, they have a more updated version )

Just got my notice by e-mail from Sympatico HSE that the 5Gb caps were also applicable for Quebec.

You realise its the punks that leech warez, movies, and @ssloads of MP3's that are the major cost in all this, dont you? While the rest of us casual downloaders, and game players, are left in a rut. Hell, with the download costs, when a new distro of Debian comes out, it would almost be cheaper to go and buy it on CD.

Which boat are you sitting in?...
