Yeah, I broke the Windrivers forum server with my Word Association thread, and I think the sequel to that thread has pretty much trashed my el cheapo free forum board on my site as well.

I then realized what I had done the night before and quickly pulled the screwdriver out of the back, being in such a rush I somehow arc'd the screwdriver across a few components inside the pwr supply

I was building a new system for work one day a few years ago. I had a brand new empty mid-tower that I took out of the box. I took everything else out of the boxes as well, and put it all together. Blah Blah Blah.

When I was done, it was now time to plug it in, turn it on, and start installing software. So I plugged it in,... Turned it on,... And then BLAM!!! ZAP!!! POW!!! All sorts of blue sparks zapped all over the place and a cloud of stinky black smoke came out of the tower. I quickly (but stupidly) grabbed the plug, and yanked it out of the wall. I'm lucky I didn't kill myself, but I wasn't really thinking at the time. I just acted instinctively to pull the plug out.

Anyway, it turns out that the brand new mid-tower had the wires plugged in wrong on the actual power switch. It came shipped that way. So I learned a very good lesson that day. I ALWAYS, check the switch wiring before beginning a new system. But I ended up blowing up the processor and mobo. The plastic on the socket 7 connector was melted to the processor. Everything else seemed to be in good working order though.

I have not ever screwed up a computer (knock on wood). I have found ones that I couldn't fix or ones that were completely dead, but I have never killed one. However, I had a work-mate that killed one once while I was there. *disclaimer* he is a great tech and I really learned a lot from him, and he usually doesn't do stupid stuff like this. He was trying to pry something off an apple mobo. I forget what it was exactly he was trying to get off, but he was using a screwdriver to do it. Rule one: never use your screwdriver to pry something off a mobo. he ended up putting a long, deep gash on the board.

Scenario:

Cleaning dust and crap out of 486 66.
Unhook all wires, remove CPU, etc....
Clean around with little vac buster and small cloth...

*all unplugged so no arcing*.

DIDN'T take heatsink/fan off CPU so can't see little notch in top right corner... Been so long since had one so figured go in any way round...

Slide CPU into socket, reattach all wires...

Power up... Whoops... FIRE!, HEAT...

Power off...

Removing the CPU after it'd cooled showed one pin had fried and dropped off, the socket was fried in the same place.

Amazingly the damned thing worked again after I'd pared off the plastic bubble and still does to this day...
