A.I. Game... Officially unofficial

The story so far...

Is anybody here participating in the big A.I. (Spielberg/DreamWorks movie) game? I first heard about it last night on TechTV. Supposedly there are over 25 bogus web pages for it. By "bogus" I mean that the sites pretend to be legitimate companies (hat stores, colleges, toy stores, personal home pages, rogue robot retrieval services, etc.
A site called Cloudmakers.org is keeping track of people's progress. However, nobody admits to running game in the first place!
The premise of the game is that your trying to solve a murder. There are clues hidden in various websites which link to other websites. One thing they showed on TechTV were tiny notches in the banner of a site. If you converted the number of notches into numbers it gave you a phone number. Call the phone number and you get "Mother" (a computer) giving you further instructions.
Nobody knows for sure who's running the game, if there will be a prize, or when it will end. Some people stumbled on the clues, enlisted others, and found this massive "conspiracy game" (for lack of a better term). There are plenty of puzzles that people haven't solved yet. Here's one for example: http://www.familiasalla-es.ro/doomed1.htm
If you're curious, visit Cloudmakers.org and check out the progress people have made so far. They explain everything a lot better than I could.

I'm intrigued by this concept.
Has anyone heard of anything similar in the past?

Sounds interesting - but I'd be inclined to think this is something along the lines of:
"Microsoft announced that a virus was released yesterday, and AOL, IBM and a lot of other big companies which sound impressive have confirmed this....pls forward to everyone you know, and everyone you don't know who's email address you have"
Anyone for a spoof?

No, it's a lot more complex than the virus hoax.
All of the bogus web sites (hundreds of hours of work) are continually updated. They were all created by the same company, and represent ficticious companies/families/colleges/groups/etc.
Supposedly thousands of people are teaming up to solve this puzzle.
It all ties into the new movie A.I. They have some of the same characters.
To sum it up: To hype the movie, someone in-the-know has a team of people building sites, adding clues, etc. Some of the riddles involve physics, chemestry the Nazi Enigma machine, etc. You have to make phone calls and faxes sometimes. It's complex.
The people who are running this contest officially don't exist. In fact, officially there's no riddle. Nobody admits to running it.
I love the concept. I'd love to be a part of it if I had more time.
I do look around for clues though, hoping to discover something that others have missed.
Again, I love the concept.
