Cool Well looks like the phones are hosed!

So we had some thunder and lightning around here yesterday but everything was working fine all day. Then I get in this morning expecting my regular pile of voice mails for support. I dial the extension for v-mail, get the usual ring, then the second, and third and fourth. Well looks like voice mails not answering. So I tried dialing out to our external number and big suprise the automated menu system isnt answering either. If the vmail system is toast its gonna be some easy sailing around here for the next coupla days. Woohoo!

Dang, it's fixed.
On the plus side i only got work from a couple of hours last night.

This makes me wonder.

How crippled would your work/place of business be due to phone/network/power outage?

For example if our server goes down. We can't receive systems, order parts, return system, invoice anything or return calls. Thanks to it all being so automated.

Our server handles these tasks:

File sharing
Voice mail
Email, internal and internet gateway
HTTP WWW access proxy
Internet firewall
DHCP server
Print server
Backups
Antivirus scanning

So if the server ever went down, our office would be twiddling their thumbs. The phones would still work, except for voice mail. I have lobbied for a second server to offload some of these tasks, but our head tech says that a single server can handle all this.

That doesnt sound like a very secure way to run an office.

I know exactly how ya feel. I'm in the process of doing the same. Wanting to split into 3 or 4 servers. But we only have 2 right now, and it's a slow process convincing about the split.

We have a set of back up servers and we have four power generators. We could power the town if we wanted to

We've got generators all over the place here. It would take a lot for us to go down for a while. I remember getting sent home from my last job when the power died....I loved it!

I don't understand ... can't you just "reboot" the phone system?

Well if one of our servers goes down the loan department can't work. If another one goes down the express phone banking won't work. If the third one goes down, it's no big deal. It holds images of the statements and is rarely used. Now if the AS/400 would happen to crash.....

Everyone except the trust department uses that thing. It would be very hard for the bank to operate without it.
