    UDMA

I HAVE A DIGTAL RESEARCH TECH 36X UDMA CDROM DRIVE. IF I ACTIVATE UDMA IN THE SETTINGS FOR THE CDROM DRIVE AND REBOOT, IT LOCKS MY SYSTEM. THE ONLY WAY I CAN BOOT IS TO PHYSICALLY DISCONECT THE CDROM AND REBOOT OR REINSTALL WINDOWS 98. MY COMPUTER IS A CYBERMAX K-6 200MMX WITH 98MEGS OF SDRAM. THE UDMA SETTING WORKS FINE ON MY TWO IBM HARD DRIVES. THE CDROM FUNTIONS IF I DO NOT ACTIVATE UDMA SWITCH IN THE SETTINGS FOR THE CDROM DRIVE. ANY IDEAS WILL BE APPRECIATED ON HOW TO ACTIVATE THE UDMA FOR FULL PERFORMANCE.

Many people here will tell you that there are problems with Windows 98 and DMA on CD drives. Apparently the DMA standard that Microsoft used in Windows 98 is not totally compatible with the DMA standard used by most CD-ROM drive manufacturers. You will need to start Win98 in safe mode, go into device manager, and uncheck the DMA box for your CD-ROM drive. If you still have trouble, you might try disabling UDMA in CMOS for the controller that your CD drive is on.
