Stay in or test out?

I have the option at my school of testing out of some of the classes that would to say teh least be easy from me, the question is should I do it?

The good side is that I have more free time

The bad side is that if I dont take them then I have to work harder in other classes to keep my gpa up

Way back when I went, I chose to stay in. It was a nice little "brush up" and an easy A to pad the GPA. After going to the next class, I was glad I had the "brush up" classes.

I was in a hurry to get to grad school so I took all the CLEP and Dantes tests they would let me...in one night I took 2 1.5hr tests, paid $45 each and went home 18 credits closer to my degree....tested 46 credits in all--much cheaper and one whole year of full-time credits in 3 nights. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I say if you wish to save some time and a LOT of money, do the tests....

It all depends on whether or not your GPA has any overall importance to you.

You seem to have a good grasp on your objectives - Do you want to finish up quickly and land a job or do you want to keep your grade point up because you need to?

I opted out of one class and aced the required test which left me enough free time to explore other venues in my other classes. This in turn helped me master these other topics and come out head of my class. But this isn't for everybody.

Test out...and screw the GPA. It will matter very little after college, anyways. Of the numerous jobs I have applied for since graduating college in '95, NONE of them have ever asked for my GPA or a copy of my transcript. I struggled through school to earn my 3.8 and it doesn't mean noodles to me now.

Spend as little time in school as possible.

I'd Stay, but that's me. But as cc_penguin said in his post, it's a good brush up and an easy A to add to your grade point average. But like Ad3pT says "It's all 'bout you man" is true, and is totally up to you. You do what is right for you, go with your gut feeling on it.

I pay the same whether I test or not, so is your opinion still the same?

I'd stay in, at least for a semester to test the waters. College is a lot different from high school. If you take the classes and they are too easy, there's really no damage done. If you get in over your head, it's hard to rebound. Before my freshman year in college when we had orientation, we saw an academic advisor to help pick classes. She looked at my high school record and ACT scores (top 15 and 28 ACT composite) and basically told me that I should skip some of the lower level courses. She told me to skip College Algebra and take Calculus. Skip English 101/102 and take Honors Seminar with Coloquium, and so on. My first semester GPA was 1.7 and I spent the second semester taking College Algebra and English 101/102. My advice would be to take some of the classes you can't test out of first semester, and make your decision from there.

If the class has enough credits I say take it. I made the mistake of taking a basic PC literacy class that was only worth 2 credits. It was an easy A but as it turns out the class was not worth my time. I ended up teaching half the class cause the professor was not speaking english well enough for much of the class to undserstand. Then the professor would get pissed at me when I helped people..I came out of school with a 3.57 GPA but that class didnt help with it at all.....Just make sure that the class will atleast interest you before you sign up.

If the subject is easy but interesting--stay in, you might learn something new and actually get something for your money besides the credits.

If the subject is easy and boring--take the test and run, no one deserves that kind of torture....

Wow I didn't know you could still CLEP! I CLEPPED (is that a word? ) 21 hrs. back in '76. It was a good way to get alot of the core courses out of the way. I'm glad I did it. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I have been giving this alot of thought and I'm still not sure that I want to do it or not.

The classes are easy easy easy, and I do need to use that time to find a job and start working.
