6th grader drew doodles in class, of teachers with arrows through them (Hands up who didnt do this sort of crap) and was suspended for a 'terrorist act'

I am appalled to even be wanting to visit the USA after this sort of garbage.

This is getting out of hand. Possible expulsion for a drawing!!! That's a little overboard. I'm glad I not that age, or I would have been expuled for the games we used to play when I was young.

I agree. I could understand a three day suspension if the kid drew the pisture to more resemble the techer or if it had a more direct threat towards the teacher. Much rather have a kid doodle to let out alittle frustration rather than perhaps getting hands on a weapon and going after the techer. A one hour detention could have still made example to show they do not tolerate would have been sugnificant enough. Man I skipped 10 days of gym class in a row and did not bet suspended for three days. People who got in fist fight usually got suspended for only a day or two. But then again, these were pre-Colombine (?sp)days too. Sure a lot is not tolerated now......

she doodled the pictures & wrote the teachers/substitute teachers name underneath the drawings. maybe not suspension, but she did deserve detention. plus she's an honor roll student, i know brain smarts doesnt necessarily mean a person has common sense, but cmon

Things just aren't the same anymore.

For example: I can remember back when I was still in school (not too long ago), if we had something like a bomb scare we would just go outside and wait for like an hour (while a few cops walked through the building to see if it was ok). If the school didn't blow up within that hour, we would go back in. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

A school in my town recently had a bomb scare and they canceled school for the rest of the day while the fire deptartment and county police went through the school with bomb sniffing dogs.

Its a different world we live in now, threats are taken much more seriously, and a lot of time its overkill.

I saw Bill Mayer (sp?) on Dennis Miller last night talking about how college "students" are the same way. It was a fantastic episode and I recommend everyone see it. My favorite line was that since 99% of television is dedicated to sensitivity, he should be allowed his tiny corner devoted to truth.

Sensitivity vs truth. We are a nation of wimps. Wimps even when it comes to other peoples ideas. Hopefully it'll swing around the other way in 10 years or so.

i remember when i was a kid i would draw stick figures killing each other in class and when the teacher caught me she would yell at me because i wasnt listening to her.

A) Is this really a credible site to really buy into this story? C'mon now. Don't get suckered into the hype.

B) I can think of a few teachers in my time who I would've gladly drawn a doodle of an arrow going through their head.

When I was in 6th or 7th grade, I got ISS (In-School Suspension, like all day detention) for simply running down the hallway. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Now that was a load of B.S.!

It's all these "zero-tolerance" policies.

When I was young, I got in 3 fights in school, 1st one - I got off, 2nd time - suspended 2 days, 3rd time, 1 1/2 days. Back then, you took a knife to school, it was taken, and you got detention.

My brother was in a fight a couple years ago. He got 2 week suspension. Next time he fights he's expelled! Tell me that's not a bit harsh. So if he's getting the crap kicked outta him, he can't swing at anyone or he's expelled. And this is a public school, not private!

I also saw another example in the paper a while back. An honor student expelled for having a bread knife in the back of his truck. It fell out of a box of things he helped his grandmother moved the day before.

what does this teach the children? I'm concerned on what kind of message these "zero tolerance" laws and "poloitcal correctness" are teaching children about how to act as adults.

Maybe I grew up in a "golden age" of education but this kind of crap was never a problem when I was in school.
