Screwed by the AO{hel}L
I know I will be flamed for having AOL, but had service since 1991 when it was available only on MacIntosh and GeoWorks for the PC. Well I cancelled it back in February. AOL agreed to cancel and give me a free month to take care of address book database and email stuff. Well, stupid me didn't get a cancellation no. I did remove the aol program, but as you know, you can access email through there aol anywhere. I kept checking email as long as i could even after the free month. At this point I should have called, but I thought that it is their fault for not allowing me to gain access. A month (after the free month) went by and I noticed that they charged me. I called them and said (wtf) why r u charging me? AOL said (sucker) the service automatically activated since I continued to check email after the free month. So, I told them to (gth) do whatever to stop billing me immediately, and to give me some record no. of this. So they gave me cancellation no., which was made 2 days after the billing period. I had to pay for 29 more days regardless.
I have put the charges of 2 months of billing after the free month in dispute through my credit card company, and suppose that is all I can do. Do you know of anything else I can do, or am I out $42?
I live in my own little world, but it's ok... they know me here

you should have just keep telling them to cancel becuase you couldnt log on, and they would have given you some more free months. i guess you can do this again when you get aol cd. when the free hours are up tell them you want to cancel cuase you couldn't logg on and taht it kept kicking you off and see if they offer any more free months so you can get your money back.

Flabooble!
If you are really upset about this you may try to contact your credit card company. Sometimes they will issue you a credit if they think you to be in the right. For instance, you buy a frisbie and it falls apart as soon as you throw it one time and you return it to the store who refuses to take it back. Well, you call the credit card company and tell them your problem and they issue you a credit and take the $ back from the store. Been done to me at my pet shop a few times so it might work for you.

AOL Hell.
Anyone out there with AOL should cancel it NOW. I know some of you may use it out there, Its a free world after all but just remeber they are a lot of better ISP which provide a superior service.
Here my story......Music starts in back ground.
I phoned up to cancel a account about a year ago due to the sytem being busy, software crashing my PC, slow download speeds and when i evetually did sign into the system AOL usually dropped the connection 80% through a download.
Phoned the account people to cancel and heres what they said.
Why do u want to leave. I told them the stuff above.
They then said sounds like your access numbers are wrong. I told them I checked and changed the access number so many times I've no idea where I'm dialing now, Besides AOL provided me the numbers so dont blame me.
Have you reinstalled out software. I said I have but its still isnt working.
Then they said Sounds like a modem fault. I said how come my modem works fine with a new ISP and is almost twice as quick.
They still blamed me and my computer and recommend I get the modem checked out by a reapir center. When I told them I was a tech and I can 100% be sure it was NOT my PC was faulty but there service they went quite. Then offered me a free month to see if I would change my mind. NO CANCEL THE DAMM ACCOUNT I DONT WANT AOL.
So if any one out there is even thinking of joining AOL please please dont. Sign up to ANY other ISP.
Music now stops and crowd starts cheering
Just for the record I've been on Worldonline of a while now and never had a connection problem. Long may it last.
I will climd down of the stage now and let someone else scream abuse at AOL now
Cheers

Ya'll ain't gonna believe this but I have never had a problem with AOL....connect on the first try probably 98 times out of 100 and have had to go back to the office cause I forgot to sign off at work and wanted to log on at home....aways connect at 49000 or better at home and at work and the two times I had a software problem I went online with one of their tech support people and solved it within 10 minutes.......guess I'm just lucky...........

The way I look at it, any ISP who sends you CD's in the mail, shouldn't be trusted.

Hmmm, how much? I'll admit, it wouldn't take me much to sell my soul to AOL/Time Warner.

Just letting your credit company put that into dispute like you did does about the most damage you can do to them. I did that with Discover (crappy interest but good service) when I bought a crappy PC years ago. If your complaint gets in with a ew others the card companies launch a probe of sorts into why they are having problems with the customers.
Its not much, but atleast it gives them a taste of the hassle you went through.
