Post Out of the blue IM's

This is linked with the post that Naked put up today (er.. yesterday) about IM's. If you use AIM or IRQ do you ever get the weird "what's up" from 8 year old girls that feel overly compelled to talk to a perfect stranger? This might lead to another topic where are the parents to protect ME from the offspring!

I quit using IMs, IRC, etc to get any work done because literally 90% of my IMs and messages were "Hey what's up, are you M or F?" Don't know, or care who they were, but I'm too busy to deal with them. You are the weakest... ah, nevermind.

    why, do you?
seriously though, there are those youngsters who do do what you describe but luckily not many.. it is a parental responsibility to guide their siblings into the right way of doing things but how many do? there's lots of nasty things out there and it doesn't take much to find it. i get 3-5 unsolicited "porn" emails daily - god knows how they found my email but they have. and i know loads a people in a similar situation.
the only thing you can do is hit that delete key~!

The best defense is to never, EVER go to their links or respond to their messages. If we all plug our noses long enough maybe these morons will someday get the idea that there isn't much money to be made from tactics like this.

I don't get bothered much.....but my wife gets about 15 messages a day from guys around the globe trying to talk to her. She just ignores them though. Thank God.

It's fairly simple actually, just block all pager messages and mass messaging from everyone not on your contact list. You can even go so far as to block anyone from contacting you that isn't on your list already. Granted I still get one or two that sneak through but it's not nearly as bad as it could be.

I always try to get into contact with the spammers letting them know that their e-mail is unsolicited and that I do not wish to receive it and then I add the ip address of the spammer to a list, when they continue, I send an e-mail to thier mail provider....usually stops it quick

I mainly use ICQ for talking to people on WinDrivers or friends that it's long distance to call. The span, I just hit the delete key, and it disappears.

I use ICQ and get perhaps 1 or 2 unwanted messages/chat requests a week...i just add the user to my ignore list and carry on with whatever i'm doing. I did go through a spell about 6 months ago of getting unwanted messages, that weren't just porn links, from women (of all ages) and even some from men...
