ADSL Faster Under WinXP?

Could it be?

I've just finished off a clean install of WinXP Pro and it seems to me that my ADLS connectivity is *much* faster thatn with Win2000.

Am I hallucinating? Have I gone so long without my ADSL that my perception is warped?

Or has anyone else noticed this?

I'm running 2k on DSL and i'm at my mdms maximum throughput, (1.5 meg mdm). I think the issue may have been your OS not beeing optimized for broadband, where XP may already have some of those optimizations in place.

That's a good guess, but I had, in fact, optimized my connection for bradband (using all the cool tips at DSLReports.com

Strangely enough, I've noticed that once out of the 4 times I've connected tonight, my system tray icon showed a connection of 100MBps <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

100mbs? that would be your netowrk card connection to your modem. Mine always shows 10, I've forced to to 10 meg, full duplex. Your issues may also be involved with the software your using. I'm using a program dessigned for 2k that interface the network card directly to windows built in dial-up networking. (called RASPPOE)

The 100MBps connection has not yet returned

I'm using WinXP to connect to Bell Sympatico High Speed Edition. When I put in my installation CD, WinXP took over and set up its own client instead.

It works fine, apart from that one glitch that I *wish* could be repeated

I haven't had time to look into other optimization tools for WinXP yet, but I'll check that out when I get home.

I use a router to connect so mine always says 100mb (obviously because of the network connection). But as you say it runs faster under xp than it does in 2k. Go figure huh? My 2k machine is also tweaked via dslreports but xp just seems to load pages and download faster. Oh well.

My ADSL is running much faster using the worst ADSL modem (Speedstream 4060) and the worlds worst IP (Etisalat) XP makes the two come together to make a reasonable connection. XP says it is running at 3.6Mb/s wish i could get that download!!!

You mean u actualy installed Access manager?? man your a brave soul. I won't let that CD touch my comp with a ten foot pole. (i broke the CD the day i got it) Why do i need 10 + megs of junk when a little 59k protocol will do the job? Besides, access manager is based off of enternet300 wich is designed for the 9x kernel.

This is sorta what I was going through last night with my setup.

Scenario 1:
Connected with just modem, and dialing with XP PPPoE dialer. NIC in sys tray says connected at 10mbps and dialer connection said the same. As you already know, I was getting sucky down/up speeds.

Scenario 2:
Tried the router. Now NIC says 100mbps, and no more dialup neccessary. But still sucky down/up speeds. Couldn't even get a page to load either way.

Scenario 3: I left the modem and router hooked up and on over night. Went to school today. Came back, turned on PC and Whammo! It's all good. NIC says 100mbps, and I'm getting the decent down/up speeds that I posted in my thread.

I do have one question on this though. The max distance from the "slam station" is 18K' right? And I'm 15K' away. So I was wondering if maybe it just took a long time for the modem/router to make a fully synched connection due to the distance. Since I don't know too much about this stuff, this is only a guess.

Adept, as far as XP making your connection faster,... that could very well be. From what I understand, the XP dialer is different from other dialers. So maybe that has something to do with it. Anyway, just thought I'd throw all that out to you all.

Well I played around with my connection a bit more and forced my 3C905C-TXM to 10Mbps full (100MBps did not work at all

) instead of leaving it auto.

Connection is good and solid, but I have no idea why 100MBps showed up on this connection in the first place.

I think I'll leave the connection active like WebHead did to see what happens

I saw no difference between XP and ME or 2000. Then again, I'm not using PPPoE, but rather a Linksys router. I did notice that PPPoE does add a slight delay and makes the system less stable (or at least it did before I "upgraded" to a router). Just my 2 cents. In my opinion there is not advantage of running ICS instead of a router. The router performs better 100% of the time.

I also use a router but I definetly noticed the bandwith change from 2k to xp.

I use xp Pro on a 56k modem, boohoo.

I tried the QOS stuff mentioned earlier , changed the % to 10 and rebooted expecting to get a better connect speed than my 45.2(crap).

Changing this made no difference whatsoever.

Any ideas?

45.2 is pretty darn good for a 56k modem. You will only really notice the difference if you have broadband.

On another note not just my internet is faster in XP but networking in general. I've copied a couple of 150MB files from system to system before and it took about 15-20 minutes but with xp it's only like 5-10. Finally they got something right.
