XP Home Boot Hang
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to solve a problem with a Toshiba Satelite laptop running Windows XP Home SP2 hanging during windows boot. Checking the event log it lists the following:
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7026
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
Fips
intelppm
SerTVOutCtlr
SrvcEKIOMngr
SrvcSSIOMngr
TPwSav
I wasn't given much history on the machine except for that it hasn't been overhauled since purchase roughly 4 years ago. Safe mode works fine and everything else seems in order.

Double check and see if the Fips.sys is in the c:/windows directory or the c:\windows\system32 directory. If it is you have a possible malware infection and need to do a scan.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

No, I'm not seeing Fips.sys in either C:/ or in the system32 folder.

These boot freezes are something that seem to be occuring a lot over the past several days according to the numbers of posts on the net.
Since yesterday my own Toshiba laptop freezes up on the Win XP screen just after boot up . Same happens with Safe Mode or any other F8 functions who all end up after a mminute or so on the same Win XP screen, the one that appears before the log in screen. External keyboard and mouse, plus CD, Floppy Disk all functioning but all else goes dead at the XP screen.

I just ended up nuking the install. There wasn't a lot that needed to be backed up, it fit on an old flash drive I had laying around. Reformat, reinstall, updates galore, done. Everything works fine now (why wouldn't it?).
