Post Windows XP and network file sharing

I have a Windows XP professional machine, and i am running it on my universities network. I can access the internet, and my roomates computer (he is runnin 2000, and has guest access on) but i cannot access any of the other workgroup computers that are in my workgroup. even those that i can access from anyone else's machine i cannot get to from mine. Nor for that matter, can they see my machine on the network. I believe that the file sharing that this network uses is based upon NetBeui. can anyone help, i have seraceh the net, and the knowledgebase, and these forums, and i have not found a good answer yet.

thanks people, you are my last hope

The Internet Connection Firewall that is enabled by default will prevent file sharing via NetBIOS. You'll need to disable the firewall - get a real firewall if you need one (There were approximately 2-3 security patches released by Microsoft per week over the last couple of months for Windows 2000 - do you really trust them to make a hack-proof firewall?)

As for NetBEUI, it's not installable by default. If you check the relnotes.txt file on your XP CD, Microsoft explains how to install NetBEUI.

    Legacy networking components
Support for the following legacy protocols is discontinued in Windows XP:

    NetBEUI, a non-routable protocol
    DLC, a non-routable protocol
AppleTalk, a protocol used with Apple computers
These protocols are replaced by equivalent functionality in the TCP/IP protocol suite

This is all I see in the notes refering to NetBEUI.
