    all i did was this:
    < !- "<a href="http://www.i-k-a.com/ikamemfm.doc">Download Membership Form in Word 97 format (738k)</a>"
    ->

when you click it, this is what gets done: http://www.i-k-a.com/ikamemfm.doc

the user has the choice of use from location or save to hdd....

    You can't.

This is dependant upon the security settings of the browser, so it will be different for each user on each system, depending on what their preferences are set to.

For example, if a user clicks the link in IE, then ticks the box to remember the settings for this file type, they will always open the Word Doc rather than ask to save it to file.

This can be reset (it's the security settings) but this can only be done by the user.

You should add some text to your site that says:

To download this document, hold the SHIFT key and click the link

This is a nice little trick that always forces the browser (both IE and NS) to do a "Save As" rather than "Open Link" when you click it.

i cant say ive ever seen the tick box you mention - thats not to say it doesn't exist! I always get the choice, open from or save to file...

your other suggestion is good though! <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

As I said, it's all to do with the personal settings on your profile/machine, as well as the registered MIME types for that PC.

As your downloads always ask you what to do, find a site with a small download (PDF or Word Doc) and clear the Confirm Open After Download and open it.

Now go back to the site and open it again - hey presto, it automatically opens without asking you!

Read article Q283093 on MSDN which shows you how to restore the behaviour of asking you what you want to do.

<---- Check it out! My first Post! Crack open the bubbly! j/k

You could also 'Zip' the the file for the 'save as' option! Primarily, I think it depends more on the file association and what the program supports. If there wasn't a pregram assigned to .doc files (unlikely) it would ask you to save the file!

Anyways... the easiest way is to, as mentioned, SHIFT & CLICK or RIGHT CLICK & SAVE AS - but not all internet users are familiar with this!!

    Cheers!
