    Question Home web server

I am looking to set my personal computer up as a Personal web server, can anyone give me some idea of where to start, maybe with some freeware/shareware programs and info about how to do this. I have corel web server but I dont think that it is made for what I want. I am very inexperienced when it comes to network type stuff so could someone help me out?

What about Microsoft Personal Web Server that is supplied with FrontPage? If I remember correct, you can download it from Microsoft's website.

If that is not what you are after, then you could always go Win NT 4 or 2K and use IIS.

Do you have a link to that? I went to their page and found documentation for it but I did not find the program itself.

What version of Windows are you using?? If you are using a version of Windows 2000 then I would suggest you to use IIS (Internet Information Services). That is a very stable web sever and yet it is pretty easy to set up and get running. If you are running Win2k then I would strongly suggest using IISS.
If at first you dont succeed, sit down and take a break.

I'm going to say something completly different than everyone else. No FP or PWS for me.

    Apache for Win32.

If you're just running 1 host (ie www.myserver.com) then it works right out of the box (so to speak). Apache requires modification of 1 text file to change anything, and it's ALL documented right in the file.

    Apache Web Server

Best of all, its free, and you can actally get some help on it. Try that with a M$ product.

Yes apache is good the only problem is that it can be hard to set up and there are many holes that you have to fix in it. Plus there is no UI. Just config files. At least last I saw for win32

    Thumbs up

If you're using Windows as your OS...

    95/98/ME - Personal Web Server
This is supplied as part of your Setup, but won't be installed by default. Goto the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup (Tab).
This is a cut-down version of IIS, so you can really only do simple stuff with it.

NT - Internet Information Server (IIS) 4
This is supplied as part of the NT Option Pack, so you need to either dig out a CD or download it from Microsoft. Includes scripting in the form of Active Server Pages (ASP) which is like VB for IIS. You will be able to dynamically create pages on the server, connect to databases, that sort of thing.

    2000 - IIS 5.
As with IIS4, but gives you extra/updated features. Most scripts (ie, ASP) should be compatible from IIS4 versions of ASP.

If you're using *nix as your OS, try something like Apache.

l have to agree with half the responses here. Apache is the MOST used, by far, webserver on the internet, and it is available for free...why pass it up? Its just a matter of running the daemon, and leaving your html files in the htdocs directory. At the risk of sounding rude/elitist, which l dont mean to be; if you can't handle that, maybe you shouldn't be running a webserver just yet

    rude/elitist ???
I think that you are 100% right
i see people coming to the windrivers chat room evry time going to run a web/ftp/TELNET server, without the basic knoleg like how to do a "port map" in the FW.
i have the knoleg/checkpoint FW and the hardware - and still i chose a Hosting service to host my site.

If you only want to run it - in order to learn how to run a web server - this is one thing - get Apachi and start learning.
But if you are thinking on actualy Hosting a site... you'd better find a Host service, safer, better bandwidth, they have UPS's and more more more. my host service charge me 25$ a year - and this include the Domain name 20M space (learn how to create a small fast loading files) and unlimited No. of Email acounts (web & pop access).

beat's the hell out of running my own web & email servers on my ADSL

I am just wanting to do this to learn more about networks and get some basic knowledge about webservers ect. I do use a hosting provider for the site that I design, but as I said, I would like to do more.
