Drive problem
Ive been having a few problems booting my pc up. Where ive had to restart it a few times to get it going. I tried a few things to sort it, and then i tried replacing the drive, and it hasnt had a problem since. Im just wondering what would cause the drive to do this, i ran Maxtor diagnostics on it and it said everything was fine. Is there any way i can save this drive, or should i bin it?

It may be that your drive has a problem with the boot sector, or bad sectors, many quick diagnostics will not see that. Scandisk thorough is also not terribly good.
I have "saved" odd hard drives by using the zero fill utilities that are available for your drive. This writes zero's to every part of the drive, obliterating partitions and any virii lurking. Then I use them as also ran drives, I never quite trust 'em again If its in warranty try and get it rma'd - if not, then spinrite may be able to help you.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I ran IBMs diags on one of my GXP75 drives. The diag claimed it was fine. I, however, couldn't format it with anything. If they send it back without replacing it I'm going to return address it to somebodys vertical smile.

Ive just re-tested the drive 3 more times, and it has an intermitant fault with the SMART self test(failed 2 out of 3). Does anyone know of a contact number for Maxtor in the UK, so i can RMA it? Cheers.
