Question hard drive vs which motherboard?

I just bought a PentiumIII866 cpu with an ASUS motherboard which is UDMA66. It also has an IBM 46G Deskstar hard drive. Shouldn't this hard drive be supported with a mother board with 100 UDMA instead of 66? The computer locks up when downloading from the net and monitor goes into standby mode. When I come back, monitor stays black, I move mouse, and hard drive is clicking. Could this be a defective hard drive? Also noticed in sysedit, there is nothing in autoexec.bat and config.sys? Maybe the people that put this together did something wrong??? Please advise!!!!!

    You don't need a config.sys or autoexec.bat
Your hard drive should work fine on any controller UP TO an ATA100. Your problem is else where. You might make sure the power saving does not turn off the hard drive when going into standby mode. Windows creates temporary files on the HD on a regular basis as part of its normal functioning...if the hard drive spins down in standby Windows may need info from a temp file to wake back up and can't get to it.
