Post I need some help. Badly

I have been so unlucky to loose my sourcecode :'(, for one of my most importent projects. Does anybody know a disambler ( decompiler ) for VB5 and/or 6.
I would be very grateful for any replies which leads to the above.

You mean you got hold of someone else's .exe and wanted to see how it works? lol!

Questioning about disassemblers and decompilers in this forum is considered asking how to hack. Mods usually won't let the thread continue (at least they haven't before) and most people won't answer the question.

    Sorry bud.

    1) HELL NO, I`M *NOT* DOING THAT, EVEN IF I *COULD* DO IT WITH SUCH A THING.

    2) Yeah, probally. Itīs quite annoying that some ppl are abusing to powerful utilities. I understand very well, what you mean, and why it could be concidered as hacking.

    Thanks for the SECOND reply.

I once asked a question in this forum about decompilers for some software whose company went out of business. I was admittedly trying to crack the security codes on the software since there was no longer support for it. The thread was deleted before I knew what happened. When I asked why the thread was deleted, THAT thread was deleted too. The mods are very serious about keeping how-to-hacking topics out.

And that is of course fully understandable. Actually I donīt your idea with the cracking of a company whoīs files still are being used, even though the firm doesnīt exist.

I see, however, nothing wrong in people whom are using those powerful program for *EDUCATIONAL* things. And by that also include *NOT* to steal others codes, or "simply" rewrite them.

Problem is, that when people who are in serious need for a powerful utility such as the decompiler I seek, are they getting stamped as wanna-bes, and Code-Thiefs etc etc etc.
I guess you can follow me. Truly is many ppl abusing those proggys, no doub there, probally 9 out of 10. Which would mean, that the one who really need it, and really did make his source himself, but lost it, canīt get back caus of 9 lamers.

As you can see this is upsetting me ( and making me sad ), but I guess there is nothing to do about it.

In your situation though Dave I would take it as a lesson hard-learned. It's very annoying when you lose source code only to be left with an executable (I've done it myself!), but you should learn your lesson and make sure you keep a backup of source on a disk and keep it somewhere safe.

If you have written the code yourself, you should be familiar with how the routine worked, so rewriting it should be a fairly simple process as you've already solved the problems. Depending on the size, it may take you some time, but it can also lead to some good code rewrites and making things neater as you're starting off with a clean slate and know where you're headed.

As for decompilers, it is a very tricky subject because there are (a few) cases where they would be considered a handy tool, but in my opinion you gain much more by learning how to do something yourself than simply copying code verbatim. There are plenty of examples out there on the internet if you look that will cover just about everything you need.

I don't even think that there are decompilers from Visual Basic code out there - I certainly haven't come across any although I must admit that I haven't looked.

Hopefully the mods won't delete this thread as it's turned into a good discussion rather than blatant asking for a decompiler.

Sorry I can't be of more help but feel free to ask questions here should you get stuck doing a rewrite as I'm sure someone will help.

Lots of lovely moralising, but no help whatsoever for the guy.

I've pm-ed him with some suggestions, which would seem the best compromise, if I post them here no doubt they'll get shot to sh**.

We aren't here to tut-tut, but to help, try and remember the ethos of this site. If somebody else writes dis-assemblers and they are legal who made us God to decide what he can and can't use it for?

Telling somebody that such and such a tool lives so-and-so, doesn't mean you are commiting the crime nor windrivers. If he is doing anything amiss then its his issue not ours.
