Question Very slow boot up when detecting....

For some reason, when my machine boots up it just takes forever at the part where it is detecting the primary/secondary slave/master. Only a primary master and primary slave are being used, and in the BIOS both of these are set to Auto detect. Ive tried turning all 4 to auto detect, but it still boots up slowly. Im talking a 2-3 minute delay just detecting things at the beginning, and after that it boots up just fine. Any ideas?

Have you tried manually setting them in the bios.
That should speed up your boot.

I think what mustang is saying is to run aut detect in your bios, I think you have to let them be detected and hiy "y" after it's detected, for all four line's. then exit the auto detect and save settings, Then Reboot.

this will manually set the drives and enter NONE on the lines not being used.

You mean go into BIOS at the part where I specify auto detect for those items, set auto detect and press Y? Or press Y while the computer is detecting them?

In Your Bios thier should be a heading called Autdetect Hard disks or some thing close to that, Go into the heading and it will automatically start detect the drives to shoe the size and Model and other stuff. As soon as the stats show up it will wait for you to hit enter, or y or n to start detecting the next drive, hit the Y and it will change the setting to use the best settings for that drive . do this for all four drives. the exit and save .

This is how my Bios works For my ASUS P-299.

I had that happen a couple times, usually when one of the drives is quite a bit older, Double check your jumpers too, just in case maybe one is wrong. Does it boot faster with only master drive or with only new drive? Try a new cable. or try separating them, 1 as master on each IDE. (does it seem to be one its hanging on or both?) Sometimes if the second (i usually copy data to new drive and put old as second)or original drive is really old or slow I just dump it. Are there bad sectors on either?
