    More *&^#$ problems!!!

Well, I got it to load win98 after taking out everything, (which I was originally trying to avoid, lesson learned? nooooooooo..)
When I was upgrading to 2k I got into the same mess where I was 6-7 posts ago.
The only thing I have in is 40G WD, ATI Radeon7500, win98 is running fine but 2k freezes the system way at the end of set up where it is "Removing the temporary files" at that point I hear a constant beep from the system speaker!!! I guess it's a hardware failure, but what?
I have formatted this disk many time with format.com and using WD Data life guard. The only thing I can think of is that if HD has EZ BIOS installed on the drive. I used to know the procedure to remove it but forgot.
Please share your ideas, now it's personal.

I was thinking about your plight last night and I wondered....

    Is your SCSI disk terminated?

It is getting crazier and crazier...

Well, I put in a new HD WD60G, took out every thing except, video, floppy, CD_ROM which is a DVD. Win98 load and works fine but win2k_pro freezes at 10% completion. 2k_server complain about not having correct "HD driver" and freezes still at 10% but with a constant beep from the speaker!!!
    Driving me crazy...
I have formatted this new drive with Data Life disk, everything worked fine. I am stumped! Please help if you can.
What does writing zeros do on the HD?

Have you replaced your MBR? Boot to a win98 startup disk and type at the a prompt fdisk /mbr Make sure to reinstall your ez drive after rebooting

I'd probably start to suspect power supply, memory or CPU at this point.

what in the world it is that 2k does not like?

Thanks guys! DIMM, processor, mobo checked out. Power supply? I will try. But what in the world could it be that win2k does not like and win98 is ok with it...
    I am lost.

    Drivers.

Are you using different drivers when installing Win98 vs. Win2k?

Well I haven't tracked this post from the start but here are a few ideas.

from what I gathared your computer is running win98 fine but hangs during the install of win2k.

Windows 2000 is much more stable thanks to the strict guidelines in accessing hardware. Defective hardware that might work fine in other versions of windows will not work in win nt/2k/xp.

    Here are a few ideas.

    1. make sure you're running the latest BIOS
    2. make sure you're using a standard IDE cable ( 18" length) and not running any disk manager program (fdisk /mbr will clear it anyway)

    3. in your BIOS setup:

    PnP O/S = disabled
    System BIOS Cacheable = no
    delayed transactions = yes
Assign IRQ for VGA = Enabled
Assign IRQ for USB = Enabled

if it still fails try this, disable ACPI support in your BIOS (if applicable) then when you start win2k install press "F5" and select "Standard PC" HAL.

    4. Make sure your RAM timing and FSB settings are correct
you can use DocMEM from http://www.simmtester.com
this will test your RAM in your system.

    5. Try a HDD based Win2k install. Format the drive using FAT32, copy the i386 folder from the CD-ROM to the HDD then boot with a floppy and run winnt.exe from c:\i386

    6. try to install a "SP integrated" copy of win2k
for instructions on how to do that you can go here:
    http://www.bink.nu/bootcd/

    hope it helps

    Maybe ACPI in the BIOS??

Do you by chance have a different video card to try?
Have seen other posts where they have had problems installing when the ATI Radeon 7500 card is present.
Seems to be bad drivers on the w2k CD.

    Good bye AUSS hello SOYO.

    Thanks everyone. I tried a different board+cpu, intel 1.8
It picked up the setup process right where it was failing with A7v133 and it was like watching the laser show. Didn't need to do a thing. I have used SOYO before when they first came out and had no complains with it, but I still wanted to use ASUS, because everyone else was!
I am using P4VSA which tiger is selling for $240 with intel 1.8G. I thought it was reasonable. Performance is superb. I don't know what the reviews are like for this board, don't even care. Customere is happy, I am happy...

Ew. So, you're pretty sure it was the board?

You didn't get a chance to try a like-minded ASUS, huh?
