    Error Message

Well, here it is in its semi-entirety:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

-Check that you have adequate disk space. If a drive is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with your manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

    - Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory properties such as caching and shadowing.

    *** win32k.sys - Address (didn't catch it) ***

    Beginning dump of physical memory.
    Physical memory dump complete.

That error I have seen on a number of occasions

According to M$ its because of Netmeeting file sharing or older Nvidia cards.

Which drivers are you using for your ATI?
Are you sure your hard drive is good?
Are you sure your onboard sound is disabled completely?
Is your AV running when it does this?
What usb devices have you got? If you disable usb, does this still happen?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I'm using the latest released drivers from www.ati.com

The hard main harddrive is brand new. There is an older one (about 2 years old, though not used for nearly 1.5 of those years) in it too though.

The soundcard (SB Live!) isn't installed yet, so onboard sound is currently being used.

AV? I'm not sure what that means. It happens all the time; whether I'm browing through files on my computer (no music or anything playing), or when I'm playing Half-Life or other games.

The printer (HP 1100 Laserjet) is USB, that's it.

I haven't tried to disable USB. Do you think I should? Why would USB cause this? I'm curious.

Thanks again. You've been a GREAT help. =)

Edit: Netmeeting isn't installed, though the installation files are on the computer. (C:\program files\netmeeting)

OK I found the latest catalyst drivers to be unstable... believe it or not try this - play spider solitaire that comes with XP - win a game and watch it BSOD .... I had to go back to the XP supplied drivers.

AV is Antivirus Software - which one are you using?
Are the definitions and scanengines up to date?

USB is often a shared irq with a pci slot - if the card in the pci slot and usb don't get along it can cause seemingly random issues.

I've experienced this too, one of the reasons I don't use ATI cards in XP, - happens more on the hybrid ATI cards though..

    O_o

    Hello again.

It's definitely one of the drivers. Recently, after one of the crashes, Windows helpfully sent an error report to Microsoft. After uploading it, I was automatically directed to a page that told me Windows had indeed dected a driver problem, but it couldn't identify which driver was causing the problem.

At any rate, I've installed five different revisions of the ATI drivers, but with no success toward stopping the crashes.

One thing though: I was sitting here thinking about the USB/PCI conflict, and decided to try a different USB port for the printer (which, by the way, is an HP 1000, not 1100 as I originally stated--oops), and found that Windows couldn't/woudln't install the drivers for the printer properly (while plugged into a new/different USB port). After a few tries, several downloads to find new drivers for the printer, I finally gave up and put it back into its original USB port, and it installed fine. o_O

    Still the crashes continue.

So today, I finally disconnected the printer--about five minuts ago, actually--and I'm waiting to see what happens. Since crashes happen most frequently while I'm playing Half-Life: Opposing Force, I think I'll play it for a bit and see if I can't get the old Operating System to crash.

    Ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks again for all of your help...

    Oh yeah...

I'm running Windows XP, version "2002", but it's kind of a Corporate Evaluation version...So I can't update it with Service Pack 1 because the CD Key isn't "valid" when the updater runs...

that would do it, corp. evaluation with no updates and such would probably do it...

Personally, if you have the cash to splash I would go and buy it..
