converting cd music to mp3
First off let me say, I'm one of those people who just isn't into music. So I've never wanted to do this for myself. Today however my boss , who is also a Pastor for a church wanted to convert a bunch of songs to MP3's so he could have them all on one cd. So what is involved.... What must we do... He isn't distributing the songs just wants them all in one place for his ministry. One of the disadvantages of being taught on the fly about computers is.. unless I have to do something I probably haven't.
Thanks for all responses

Not only is it free, but it will even error correct badly scratched disks that won't play in your cd player.
You will need Lame as well.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

music match does fine, exact audio copy Noo Noo mentioned also does a good job, but is a little more for intermediate to advanced users.
music match will set you back $30 I think
Exact Audio copy is free which is always good
If you have XP, you can use Media player to convert to wma for free, or pay cyberlink $10 for a mp3 plugin which works very well. I think that versions of media player from 7 up will rip to wma as well on any operating system though I'm a little cloudy on that right now.
wma is microsofts propriatary media compression scheme which to my ears sounds quite good is supported by quite a few portable players and almost all burning software. compression with wma is a little better and you can save space by using a 96kb wma as opposed to a 128kb mp3 and fit more songs onto a specified storage area/device
feel free to pm with any questions

You will need Lame as well.
As much as I respect NooNoo's opinion I must say -
Lame is an Encoder.
and may I say a very low in quality - yet very fast and free.
I Suggest You will pay Extra $$$ and purchase A proffessional Encoder.
I use the professional version of Fraunhofer Institue (which somewhat responisble for developing MP3 technology) Encoder.
It cost - Slow - but believe me worth it.
You can find more information about it in:
http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/products/index.html
P.s. remind your boss that in order to play Mp3's he will need a dedicated hardware. Most users think that you can play Mp3's in an Ordinary CD-Player.
Mp3's has their Pros and Cons.
Good Luck,
Gabriel

The ripping to wav is the job of eac, what you use to encode to mp3 is up to you.
This site has some very good advice

Hmm. I use LAME @ 320 HQ for all of my mp3s. Most of the devices that I use for playback (computer, car, basement stereo) aren't capable of reproducing audio any better than the MP3 or, I'm not concerned with that edge of quality that a lossless encoder would produce.
When I really want to enjoy/experience a cd (or audio DVD), I put the CD into the marantz, sit in the sweet spot of my Viennas, and enjoy. The shear quality will make you smile but it's just not necessary for me 95% of the time.

sorry Gab, but with the release of the new LAME 3.92 - it has been re-written from the ground up, and compresses much better than before, especially with VBR enabled (which is what I use.. - hell why bother having 100 songs at CBR 320? whe VBR gets the same quality when needed for muhc less space???)
Garak.
All sorts of wonderful things in life.

Flabooble!
Yeah, I like lame too. Works fine with audiograbber if you encode at 128 or higher.
