Do you ahve a setting for PIC / APIC in your bios?

This error usually occurs after changing from APIC back to PIC.

YOu could have resolved this by setting the bios setting back to APIC and then using the recovery console, run a chkdsk /r.

I have fixed this same scenario many times with these steps. Cusotmer upgrades BIOS, or just loads defaults, and they lose the APIC setting. Once windows is installed with APIC, you cannot set it back to PIC with out damaging the os.

Dont confuse this with ACPI which is not the same thing.

If your MB does not have a PIC/APIC setting, then this is not the answer.
