The way I understand it, this "election" was to determine if people still want him to stay in power. If enough people say yes, then the process ends for another period of time. If enough people say no, then people are able to run against him. Of course in reality, the only way he is going to leave power is by force.

Nah..they are using the same voting booths we have in Florida, there is no miscount, move along, nothing to see here.

Well, of course you're going to vote for Saddam, he's the only name on the ballot

Our most glorious leader, defender of the Faith, Slaughterer of the Kurds, Defyer of the Great Satan: Saddam Hussien , his name be praised and exalted etc etc etc etc

Instant Torture and Death for You, your family, freinds, neighbors and convienence store clerk.

Well, sadly he IS popular among a good portion of his population, after all the only viewpoint they get is HIS. And it is US who have sanctions and a virtual embargo on his nation, and all his people know if they are starving and Saddam says its is OUR doing....Will the People of Iraq rise up against Saddam? HELL NO, they know what he did to the Kurds, and he has the Army, well fed and with guns, lots of guns....

There IS a dissident movement in Iraq, but it is woefully undermanned, underarmed and split along several political/religous factions....

Saddam used the old "vote for me or I'll shoot you in the head" campaign.

Can you imagine the courage it must take to vote against him? Last term he got 99.999. % of the vote. This term he got 100%. I wonder what happened to the poor soul(s) who voted against him?

Interestingly, it's one of the few ballot papers which has your name and address on.

Actually, they mean 100% of the people who voted voted "Yes" to Saddam staying in power another 7 years.

I guess not voting is the only way you have of saying "No"

As stated before this wasn't an "election" It was actually just a referendum stating he should stay in power another 7 years, until this farce of a democratic process can happen again.
What do you think of the Compaq Presarios?
