Sick PC
I have an HP 751N machine that yesterday morning refuses to boot up. I get a screen that states an error has occured and I can choose either to boot in safe mode, normally, or last known good config. No matter what I select the computer will get to the XP loading screen and instantly restarts. Does anyone have any ideas how to get this up and running again?

It more than likely has an OEM version of XP, and therefore no recovery console, so more than likely, you have to use the recovery cds to get it running again.

This computer did not come with recovery disks. It is one of the few HP models that they discontinued the rescue/restore cd's. Any other ideas?

try booting and hitting either just f10 or control /f10 to get you into the hidden partition hp uses to load the restore image on

I hate to say it but always RTFM !!!!
it's in that nice little section about Recovery
Many of the new systems today come witha hidden partition containing the recovery image. There's a very simple reason hy they do it - It would usually take 2-5 CDs for recovery of a typical systems (XP+apps) and It would take longer to restore.
besides - most people tend to lose their recovery CD

My question is What Happens when the computer is not under warranty and the hard drive goes bad?

Well goes the theory that they don't supply bad hdd's... however, since the machine is licenced and the licence number is supplied on the sticker - you buy a new hdd and use the correct version of windows to reinstall is what I would think, but, are the licences supplied with machines such as this valid keys for ordinary oem windows?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

You can call HP (toll call, of course) and order the recovery disks.

Yeah..the recovery cd is available from HP..and these days I always tell my customers to order one and put it in a safe place. First time this came into the shop though..didn't have a manual, since the Walmart here decided to sell a number of display samples last christmas..no documentation of any sort. So..yes Condor..I usually do rtfm..when available

All's I need now is the driver's for the VGA and NIC and I will be good to go, it seems a bit difficult to find drivers for a SiS 650, the journey continues....At least the pc is running!
