I've found that using the Linksys Wizard CD that comes with the router is the fastest way to connect to DSL.
Unplug your router and get your DSL back up and running first on your computer
Insert the Wizard CD and follow the instructions, it will automatically configure the router for your internet connection
Also make sure you have the lastest firmware patch for the router.
An obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

I updated the firmware and used the Wizard and the wizard always says that cannot connect to the internet, turn off the DSL Modem and turn it back on again.

642R is a router. You need the linksys to be in bridge mode, or replace the linksys with a switch.
