Red face getting files from a bad hdd

    hi all,

i have a 8gb Western Digital hdd and it has some bad clusters on it.

if i slave the drive and boot to the primary and try to read the dead drive it says it's not formatted.

if i put the dead hdd as primary and try to boot to it locks after the screen says now loading DAPI settings or something (right before the win98 splash screen)

if i put the dead hdd as the primary and boot to a dos boot disk and try to cd to the dead drive it says that the device is not available (abort, retry, fail)

is there any way to grab some of the files off of the hard drive ?????

    thanks for the help

take an extra WD drive, install it with the drive overlay provided by WD (make sure the overlay is really installed--you should get a message "press ctrl to boot to floppy."), connect the damaged drive as slave and try again. I bet this will let you see "inside" what's left of the drive.

Download EZDisk from WD's web site.

    Oops! Old-timers disease!

The overlay will work as long as one of the drives is WD.

Well, they changed software and names more often than I change underwear....Disk Manager, EZ-Drive, Data Lifeguard, etc.!
