CD Key?
Hello,
I have a windows NT 4.0 system. the prob is the user wants to format the comp and install 2000. Then install NT 4.0 on another computer he has lying around.
The problem is he can't find the cd key for NT 4.0. I remember seeing a utility that was posted here not long ago that could retrieve it. If anyone remembers could they please post a link.
Yes the comp and OS are legitametely bought. He just can't find where he put the cds and motherboard box

Try this curtesy of futuretech in the 2000 forum...
BTW if you use the search and type in CDkey you get all the links with that enquiry, and there are a few...

Thanks NooNoo.
Yeah I figured there were hundreds of requests for that but thought one more can't hurt it.

That will give you the product ID, not the key.

that works on 95, 98 and ME. but not on 2000, i haven't tried it on NT or XP but i think it would be the same as 2000.
Bootdisk.com has a program that could pull up your cd key from a DOS prompt, but i haven't tried it on NT/2000/XP.
take care and tempt not the fates

Copy the lines between the dashed lines to the clipboard and paste them into Notepad:
================================================== ======================
var WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell");
var ProductKey =
WSHShell.RegRead("HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windo ws\\CurrentVersion\\ProductKey"); WSHShell.Popup(ProductKey, 0, "Windows 98 Product Key", 64);
================================================== ======================
Save that file as "PRODKEY.JS" and doubleclick in Explorer.
Of course you'll have to go into that and fix the references to win98 and like that. And if they've moved it somewhere else, of course it won't work either, but get back to us where it was - a win2k version wouldn't be too hard to hack from the above would it?

Windows 2000 does NOT put the cdkey in the registry. so the above would not work no matter how much it was edited.
The key is kept in a bin file on the hard disk. The registry shows the product key wich is different from the CD key

Thanks for that info - then the CD key is not even used in win98 as the product key is the only one required for me to type in to install win98. And its found on the back of the CD case - so pardon my confusion about the exact usage of the term CD key.
