Remove XP Pro?
A friend recently purchased a used computer system from a private party on Ebay that came with Windows XP professional edition already installed. The system runs great (500 mhz, 196 MB of RAM, 10 gig hdd). Unfortunately the the cab files are not on the hard drive to install the files needed to connect to the Internet using a dial up connection. Since I have Windows 98se on disk is it possible to remove XP and install 98se? The problem is that XP is SO different then 98se I'm not quite sure how to go about it.
Thanks

Yes it is possible.
Assuming the file system has been set to NTFS (and if it hasn't these directions will do no harm)
Get a known good windows 98 startup diskette.
Boot with boot diskette (cdrom support not required for the this part)
at the A:> type
fdisk /mbr
press return, nothing much will appear to happen.
Reboot with the startup diskette (no cd rom support)
at the A:> type
fdisk
press return
Select Y for large hard disk support
If you select 4 display partitions, if it was formatted with NTFS you will see you have a non dos partition, if not it will show you fat32 partition information.
Remove the partition(s) by using the delete menu option, then create the new partition(s) you want.
Reboot and format. Windows 98 will install ok.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
