Usually you'll do 1.5x the ammount of physical memory, so you'd have 248 * 1.5 = 372mb virtual memory. I usually use double physical, which in your case would be 496mb.
One question... how the hell did you get 248mb?? The only thing I can think of is if you had 4 slots, with 32mb on board, 128mb chip, 64mb chip and an 8mb chip. Thing is, I haven't seen an 8mb chip in friggin YEARS... since Pentium 60 days!!

my guess would be he has 8mb of memory shared with onboard video.
on the topic: this has been discussed in this forum before, do a search.

8mb shared ram to the onboard video.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Technically 256mb is really 262,144 KB. It's because of binary to decimal conversion.
kilo = 1000^1 (decimal) = 1024^1 (binary) or 2^10 = 1024
mega = 1000^2 (decimal) = 1024^2 (binary) or 2^20 = 1,048,576
giga = 1000^3 (decimal) = 1024^3 (binary) or 2^30 = 1,073,741,824
etc!
2^18 = 262,144 but when we convert into decimal, we get 256MB. Screwy, yes.
If someone can explain it better, PLEASE DO!!!
