Question Maxtor 30 Gb HDD and Asus a7v133

Can somebody please explain why my system freezes when I connect my Ultra/ATA 100 HDD up to the Ultra/ATA 100 controller, I'm able to install a whole OS, ot doesn't matter which, but once installed and I'm just about satisfied, the whole d*mn thing hangs, even the mouse, and yes I do use an 80 pin connector, please help me out, I mean if this was a Windows problem I would not have to doubt myself or my ability to install a descent system, Gr .Joey

If the HD was connected the whole time you were installing the OS, I would tend to believe it is software or driver related to something else you were installing. If you were finished installing the OS and then added the HD it could be a bad HD or cable.

But like I said I've installed several OS'ses, Win2000,WinME,Win98, all of them have the same problem, I've replaced the HDD two times now with identical ones <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

Check the placement of the connector or try just a 40 wire cable, also make sure the chip is not over heating.....

Sounds like an overheating prob (as Sly said) or possibly the PSU isn't man enough for the job...what wattage is it? I've also had faulty 80wire cables before...try swapping it for another.
