Try to boot into safe mode, and see if you get any icons then... Also, when no icons appear on the screen, it could be that you have them turned off! Right click anywhere and go to properties, go to active desktop, and make sure that you don't have " Show web content " checked, as there is a bullet in there that will allow you to hide your icons...

Are you on a network?
Have you got tweak ui?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Question: Is "explorer.exe" running?
If not, can you access the Task Manager, click New Task.. and enter Explorer.exe?

Has your system directory changed? Have you added a hard drive? Run task manager and click file/run and type cmd. When that box opens type "set" hit enter and let us know what you get. Then, at the c: prompt, type "dir" hit enter and let us know what you get.

check that and check to see that the feature "hide icons when desktop is viewed as a web page" is not enabled in the display properties.

I'd navigate to My Computer>C (if your root drive)>Documents and Settings>Your Profile>Desktop
and see if the icons are showing in the folder.
1) If no icons there, then none can show on your desktop
2) If Icons there, then one of the suggestions previously posted may help, or the Icons may be outside the visible area of the screen. If so, right-clcik on destop, and auto arrange
Good luck!

sounds like a corrupt profile. if there is another profile you can log in with such as administrator do so. if a desktop shows up find the profile you've been logging in under and delete it. restart then log in.
