    Question CDRom Problem?

Hi, I have a problem with my DVD Rom, When I insert a cd or a dvd, the dvd rom spits its back out. I have tried to reinstall windows, I have tried a cold boot. I have tried to boot up with a boot disk which includes MSCDex. I can not afford to by a new CDRom or DVD rom for that matter. Can anyone help me with this problem. Thank you!

It sounds like it's having trouble reading the media. So you've tried several types of media and the results are the same? It happens with DVD's and CD's as well as CD-R's and CD-RW's?

Either way your options are limited. You can try reseating and/or replacing the IDE cable. You can also see if there's a firmware update for your drive.

Several budget DVD-ROMs are notorious for read problems. You may have to bite the bullet and replace it. How old is it? If it's still under warranty you can RMA and have it replaced for the cost of shipping.

There is also the possibility that you have one of the new viruses that affect the cd-rom tray: for example, this from a virus report last week
"We are going to finish today's report with Aileen. This Trojan goes memory
resident and opens and closes the CD_ROM tray. When it is run, it sometimes
creates a file called WINCOPY.EXE in the Windows system directory.
Similarly, it creates a key in the Windows Registry in order to ensure that
it is run every time the affected computer is started up."

you may want to do an online virus scan as well
