Unhappy Quantum CX hard disk, PLS help

    i'm constantly getting "directory structure"
errors when i run scandisk to install win ME,
i've tryed a regular format, a low level format... the regular format will work but the low level format locks up on me seconds after it starts..... scandisk keeps locking up on me if it gets far enough to check "free space".
i'm lost, i checked the cords, the mainboard, the IDE channel, and even the bought new IDE cables......
if you can give me some help i'd appreciate it very much.

Most likely bad drive - download and run manufacturers diagnostics on it.

Probably a bad drive. I agree too. If it's still under warranty, RMA it ASAP.

Unfortunately, it's well-known (among repair techies) problem with CX and LCT drives caused by overheating of driver IC (Philips TDA5247).
It's one of symptoms ,what drive is going to die.
Try to RMA drive,or overwise use additional small cooler for cooling that IC. It will prolong drive's live, but nevertheless that drive is dying... Sooner or bit later...- backup all data...

Maxtor now handels Quantum drives, I just RMAed 3 Quantum drives through Maxtor, it took them about 14 days to return them, not bad for Maxtor. You can check for warranty info Here. Or call 1-800-2MAXTOR (262-9767).Just a little info....
