gr-d72u
An update and yet more HELP.
My 'puter blew its hard drive and we lost everything and no one can help! (Unlees you know differant).
But now we need to get our full dv tapes onto dvd's.
BUT........here goes.........
I have a jvc gr-d72u.
All I have is the usb driver cd, (which says it has imagemixer on it, which wont upload.
The JVC "video community" cd , which wont upload.
I have imagemixer 1.7 on my 'puter, but it doesnt recognise the dvc.
Do I need the initial installation software or is that it?
I have a firewire but on my 'puter, there isnt a small outlet only usb, so I am using the usb outlets.
Wtf is up with the darn thing. Pictures from the memory card upload fine but we want to download and edit/burn to dvd all our movies.........what the heck am I doing wrong here.........its very very frustrating
I have windows xp

AFAIK, you need a firewire port for video transfer.

Are you saying that I HAVE to use a fIrewire?
I do have a ieee 1394 cable. There is a port on the DVC but not on my tower!
But there is a usb port available on both.

Mikal, virtually no one on the planet has ever been able to get your camera to work with a USB port. There is an incredible volume of complaint about this issue on JVC's user forums and elsewhere.
CCT's suggestion about using FireWire for the transfer is about the only thing that works. You can buy a firewire card from newegg.com starting at about $8 or Tiger Direct from $10. They are easy to install. I would try to stick with a card using a VIA controller and avoid TI controllers.
Going this route is going to save you many hours of grief and frustration.

seems that I will try the firewire card from newegg..........whatever a firewire card is and which one do I buy???? Is there a type/model someone can give me?
OR just ditch the effing camera and buy a new one that works!
So ..............whats best for under $300k!

FireWire is just another name for the 1394 controller/connector standard. The cards usually just plug into a PCI slot on the computer's motherboard. I think something like the Syba SD-VIA-3F is adequate.

Just remember to turn off the computer before you open it up and discharge any static electricity you may have built up before touching the inside of the case. The easy way to do this is to hold a metal water pipe for 15 seconds minimum and don't rub any balloons!
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
