    Messenger Madness

OK... as if the confusion over Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger wasn't bad enough, I got an IM stating that an update to Windows Messenger was available today. After installing it created two new shortcuts. One for Windows Messenger and one for MSN Messenger. Now here's the kicker... they're actually the same (both point to Windows Messenger).

Of course MSN Messenger is still alive and well and had absolutely nothing to do with this update. What the heck is Microsoft thinking? It almost seems as through they're intentionally going out of their way to propagate the confusion.

Anyone know what gives or at least have a theory?

I noticed that as well. It's probably just a fluke and I wouldn't worry about it. Delete one or the other. Like you said they both point to the same thing. Cheers.

This has happened to me on several occaisions. As for as I can tell, WIndows Messenger access MSN messenger's update system and think the updates apply to it too (nice MS). Usually i just disable Windows Messenger because with MSN messenger (at least since 5.0) I can video conference with any other version of windows whereas Windows Messenger will only do it with other XP machines. This problem was going to happen as soon as they decided to make 2 versions of the software (1 for xp , 1 for everything else).
