    Smile Power Supply

I don't remember if this has been addressed or not. If an older PC has a lower power supply like the HP Protiva, is it possible to put a newer PS 250 -300W in it without burning something up? I have heard yes and no. Any help clearing this up is appreciated.

You should not have a problem installing a bigger power supply into the system. The voltages will still be the same and supplied to each of the components in the system. The only difference will be the amount of amperage that can be supplied (it will be higher). The only problem I can forsee would be that the new power supply would not fit into the same area. If its a standard size power supply and not a micro power supply you will be set.

just watch on dells and compaqs. dell has been using propriatary pinouts since 1998 and I've come across a few compaqs that are also using different pinouts. wasted a board because of that

always check the wires against known standard power supply pinouts.
