IE Connection Problem

Hi,

Got a machine running Win 98 SE with IE6. The pc is connected to internet via ADSL Broadband Connection. Problem is that when you launch IE it does not present the dial up connection box. Instead it just sits there with an egg timer cursor and a blank white page. I can launch the dial up box manually and can connect to the ADSL connection no probs. If I do this and then launch IE the same blank page occurs. If I launch Outlook Express this presents the dial up box and works fine.
So far I have tried the following:

Rolled IE back to IE5 (Still same problem)
Reinstalled IE6
Carried out a repair on IE via Add/Remove Progs
Removed all temporary files & internet files
Reinstalled OS over the top of itself.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know before I format this machine and start again.

My first thought is a virus that's probably hosed TCP/IP and or Winsock. Heres a step by step reinstall : http://www.compu-docs.com/winsock9x.htm
Also, have you run an AV scan as well as a Spyware scan yet?

Looking over your post you don't mention whether "Always dial my default connection" option has been checked in internet options... OE and IE have different connection settings and OE can override internet options which it is most likely set to do (connections tab in account settings)...

Edit: My mistake I just noticed yer using DSL (*sigh*) anyways... try using http://www.raspppoe.com/ and doing what I suggested....

Either that or buy a $40 router...

Hi,

TCP/IP and Winsocks are fine as I can connect via ADSL connection manually and can ping domain names. I think this is definately a fault with IE itself.

What about using other web browsers like firefox? does it bring up the connection?

i would suggest some spyware removal programs like Spybot and Adaware just to be sure

well time wise sometimes that's the best option... but that seemed a bit excessive just to save the person 3 seconds having to click on "connect"... like I said though, RASPPPOE might have solved the problem...

No, you don't understand. The browser wouldn't work full stop even if you connected to the internet manually the browser still wouldn't work. Anyway, all is OK now. I suspect it may have been some sort of registry problem but I could have been there hours trying to figure it out, like you pointed out.

Hi,

I didn't actually try that cos the internet connection was working i.e I could ping domain names from a command prompt. It was just the fact that the browser wouldn't display the page or open the ADSL connection box automatically.
