    I'd like to wish you all a Happy Fourth!

    In case any of you ever wondered what happened later to the signers of the Declaration of Independence the following will help you to find out. Our country may not be perfect, but I can't think of a better one.

    Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

    *Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

    *Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

    *Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

    *They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.


    What kind of men were they?

    *Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence, knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

    *Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his Ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
    Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
    Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

    *At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

    *Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
    John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.


    Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

    So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

    George Washington was a distiller. Pretty cool... he used to ship thousands of gallons, mostly rye. Heh.

    On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy, "Our American Cousin," President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Accompanying him at Ford's Theater that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a twenty-eight year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancee, Clara Harris




    A study in coincidence

    Abe Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. JFK was elected to Congress in 1946.
    Abe was elected President in 1860. JFK was elected President in 1960.
    The names "Lincoln" and "Kennedy" each contain seven letters.
    Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
    Both their wives lost children while living in the White House.
    Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
    Both were shot in the head.
    Both were shot from behind.
    Both were shot and killed with one bullet.
    Both were rumored to be killed in a conspiracy. Neither was confirmed to be a conspiracy.
    Both were in the presence of their wives.
    Lincoln was shot in the Ford Theater. Kennedy was shot in a car made by the Ford Motor Company (a Lincoln no less)
    The secretary of each President warned them not to go to the theatre and Dallas, respectively.
    Lincoln's Secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.
    Both were assassinated by Southerners.
    Both were succeeded by Southern Democrats
    Both successors were named Johnson.
    The names "Andrew Johnson" and "Lyndon Johnson" each contain 13 letters.
    Both successors had held seats in the US Senate.
    Both Johnsons were opposed for re-election by men whose names start with "G".
    Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
    John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.
    Both assasins were known by their three names.
    Both assasins names have 15 letters.
    Both Booth and Oswald were southerners favoring unpopular ideas.
    Booth ran from the theatre and was captured in a warehouse. Oswald ran from the warehouse and was captured in a theatre.
    Booth and Oswald were both assassinated before their trials.
    The only complete filming of Kennedy's assasination was shot by Abraham Zapruder. The only complete account of Lincoln's assasination was written by John Zelfindorfer.
    A week before Lincoln was shot, he was with friends in Monroe, Maryland. A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with his friend Marilyn Monroe.
    Lincoln's last child, Tad, had his funeral held on July 16, 1871 and later was exhumed and moved to a different grave site. Kennedy's son JFK Jr. was lost at sea on July 16, 1999 ad later he was found, brought up, and then re-burried at sea.
    To cap it all off, both were mammals who had wives and a good head of hair ... just coincidence!?
