    Question what version?

I have recently started playing around with Linux, it came free with a PC I built for a friend. How do I find out what version it is (Mandrake/SuSE/Slackware) ?

All the info I have so far is here:
    kernel 2.4.18
    GNOME 2.2
    KDE 3.1
    Pladao Office

It may well be a generic Thai version.

should say if it boots up...

like for redhat it wil lsay redhat

    and have somthing like

    SSH Server Enabled [OK]
    Apache HTTPD Server [OK]

    etc...

you know if its slackware cause its harder to use and it doesnt have all the propaganda like mandrake and redhat

when you load Xwindows (gnome, kde) if its redhat it will have a little guy with a red hat, etc...

do you have a copy of the cd?

When it boots into the GUI I get a splash screen from the the vendor (some computer company in Thailand).

can't see much propaganda on there (the little penguin appears where the redhat should be)

In the KDE control center it has this:

KDE version : 3.1-7 Red Hat
    User : me
    hostname : localhost.localdomain
    System : Linux
    Release : 2.4.18-20x.10
    Machine : i686

    Be prepared for more questions

yup it says redhat.. looks like the company is usnig redhat but just changed somethings...other than that its redhat and the kernel is 2.4.18 which is redhat 8

redhat 9 uses the 2.4.20 kernel
